After a shocking upset at home last week to Burnley, an away match against a talented team like Tottenham did not inspire much confidence among Blues’ fans. However, Chelsea were able to survive over a dozen Tottenham corners and a disastrous own goal late in the game to pull out a 2-1 win and three much needed points in the Premier League table.
Chelsea opened up the scoring on an unbelievable free kick from Marcus Alonso, a curving shot over the defense and into the top right corner over the outstretched hand of keeper Hugo Lloris. The rest of the half saw Tottenham control the ball most of the time, and it seemed like only a matter of time before someone would tie the game. However, Chelsea was able to play strong defense and keep the ball out of the net the rest of the first half and deep into the second, before subbing on Pedro and Michy Batshuayi. Everything was going fine for the Blues, until a weak Tottenham free kick went directly to Batshuayi, who mistakenly headed the ball into his own goal, tying the game in the 82nd minute.
After the own goal the game seem destined to be a draw with each team earning a point apiece, until Chelsea made one of their few runs of the game, and Marcus Alonso slotted home a second goal, sending the Chelsea fans in Wembley Stadium into a fury behind the goal. With the win, Chelsea is back into the middle of the Premier League standings, and do not have to hit the panic button while waiting for star player Eden Hazard to return from injury.
