Last week, Gennady Golovkin defeated previously unbeaten Dominic Wade with a second round knockout. Until about a week before the fight, I had never heard of Gennady Golovkin. When I started to look him up, I was shocked at the Middleweight champion’s background and stats. Golovkin is currently 35-0 in the middleweight division, with an insane 22-fight streak where he has knocked out his opponent. In over 375 professional and amateur fights, Golovkin has NEVER BEEN KNOCKED DOWN. Even in the few amateur fights he lost, he took the fight the full length and never went down once. The only knock against Golovkin is that he has not really faced any star opponents in his 11 year career. However, he is almost certainly fighting Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez next, which would be a defining fight for both boxers. However, some people believe Alvarez will avoid this fight, as more than a few fighters have turned down the chance to fight Golovkin. It’s very rare in any sport for people to avoid taking on the best, and it is simply because people have no faith they can beat Gennady Golovkin. Even though I am not a huge boxing fan, I will be waiting very anxiously to watch Golovkin-Alvarez for the Middleweight belt.
